One slot, two RTPs: why the same game pays differently

Slot reviews and provider pages quote a return to player (RTP) figure — say 96%. That number is often not what you are playing. Several developers release the same game with more than one RTP setting and let the operator choose.

What RTP means

RTP is the share of all money staked that a slot is designed to return over a very long run. At 96% RTP, €100 000 of total bets returns about €96 000 and the remaining €4 000 is the house edge. It says nothing about any single session, which can end far above or far below that.

Why one game has several RTPs

Some studios ship the same title in multiple configurations — for example 96% and 94% — and operators choose which to offer, often as a commercial decision. The game looks identical: same art, same features, same name. The only difference is the maths behind the reels.

SettingAverage loss per €100 stakedOver €5 000 staked
96% RTP€4€200
94% RTP€6€300

Two points of RTP sounds small, but it increases the expected loss by half in this example.

How to find the RTP of your version

  1. Open the game’s information or paytable screen. Many games print the RTP there.
  2. Check the game rules page — it may list several values and say which applies to the operator.
  3. Ask support in writing which RTP the casino uses for the specific title.
  4. If the casino cannot or will not say, treat the lowest published value as the one in use.

Where it matters most

High-volume play, wagering requirements and low-stake grinding multiply the difference. If you need to clear a bonus on slots, choosing a higher-RTP title and checking the version is one of the few choices that changes your odds.

Do not confuse RTP with volatility

RTP is the long-run average; volatility describes how bumpy the ride is. A high-volatility slot can have the same RTP as a low-volatility one and still swallow a €50 bankroll in ten minutes. Set a budget based on session length, not on the percentage printed on the screen.
